Hello

DAWN ROE - 'THE BALANCE MENTOR'.

Hi, I'm Dawn and...

It's really a pleasure to be working with adults 55+ with stable medical conditions, people who want to stay independent, active, and involved with the people and in the places that matter to them.

Again and again, I notice the same thing: there is a spark in these people, a desire to keep moving, keep contributing, keep joining in, and keep being themselves. My role is to provide a method for successful exercise around that spark, so people can keep doing what's important to them.

My understanding of this started early. When I was about nine years old, my grandfather pulled out a yoga book and decided we would try a couple of poses together on the living room floor - half serious, half playful, seeing what sort of “pickle” we could get into. That moment stayed with me. It taught me that age is not a restriction for trying new things, and that becoming strong and flexible can be enjoyable, even fun, especially when it is shared.

Years later, after 30 years as an NHS physiotherapist, I retrained as a fitness instructor, and then a Postural Stability Instructor.

I started to see a gap.

There seemed to be a missing middle in exercise offerings for older adults: chair-based options were often too cautious to build practical strength, while many standard classes were too demanding, too fast, or not adaptable enough. That left many people - especially those experiencing subtle decline, reduced confidence, or changing physical capacity - without an option that was both safe and appropriately challenging.

I began trialling a different approach in classes commissioned by local GPs. The response was clear. Dropout rates fell, participants wanted to continue, and when classes were later established at the local leisure centre and community halls, they filled through word of mouth and clinician referral.

My mission is simple: to provide a method for progressive strength and balance exercises, reflecting real life, so older adults can feel confident in their bodies, stay independent, and keep doing what matters most to them

My vision is bigger: a world where regular, appropriate, progressive exercise for older adults is normal, so avoidable physical and social decline becomes far less common.

This work is already making a difference. In local classes, people report better balance, greater strength, improved wellbeing, and renewed confidence (see the testimonials). Some graduate from the classes as they return to their favourite activities. Others continue the classes as they value the slower pace, clear structure, and supportive environment that helps them keep going.

And there is something else that matters greatly: community. People encourage one another, share stories, offer lifts, support local events, and help each other feel seen. That sense of connection is part of what helps people stay involved, and staying involved is the ultimate goal.

Moving online is the natural next step. It means more people can access the right level of support, wherever they are, and at a time that suits them. I’m building it with and for the community that grows here, and I’d love your participation. Let's work together so that we can all...
